Jeff Gordon climbs from his famous Dupont Chevrolet after winning the Winston Cup Series’ marquis event, the Daytona 500. He won the race on Feb. 14, 1999. Citrus County is known as a nature lovers paradise. This great blue heron rests atop a stump on Lake Rousseau as the sun rises casting a golden glow across the water.
New home construction in the Citrus Hills area of Citrus County has continued to see a steady increase. The early morning sun casts a deep shadow of this worker as he guides a truss into place during this June 2001 photograph. The elusive white tail deer blend into their surroundings perfectly. These doe stand like statues hoping not to be detected.
After the 9-11 terrorist attacks Citrus County, like the rest of the country, rallied to support the police and fire fighters in the community as well as remember those who lost their lives in the collapse of the World Trade Center buildings. A tearful memorial service was held at Rock Crusher Canyon. One of the main tourist attractions for Citrus County is the manatee. This aerial photograph of the main spring in the Crystal River, King Spring, depicts the amount of mammals that flock to the warm springs of the river during the coldest months of the year. The waters flowing from the aquifer into the river remain a constant 72-degrees year-round.
The traveling Vietnam Traveling Tribute Wall came to Inglis, Fl, in June, 2002 leaving many visitors in awe. Homosassa resident Chris Kellerman, an Army veteran, tearfully kneels in front of the wall as he remembers one of his friends that died in the war. The British League Soccer Camp teaches soccer enthusiasts, both young and old, how to play the game better. These groups of youngsters seem to have a hard time concentrating as they listen to one of the instructors.

James Siner, left, buries his head in his hands on May 2, 2001, after colliding with Andrew Leonard at the intersection of S.R. 44 and C.R. 581 in Inverness. The crash, which rolled Siner’s new truck, tied-up traffic for a half-hour during the peak of rush hour.
